AUTHOR of multiple books and more than 50 academic articles, essays, and reviews about medieval European and Middle Eastern history, including a 2018 Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year.

SPEAKER for professional and local audiences, large and small, who has given over 60 invited lectures, conference papers, and community talks across America and abroad.

PROFESSOR with 23 years of teaching experience in higher education, who teaches military history to field-grade officers at the Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC).

LEADER in scholarly endeavors, as the past President of De Re Militari: the Society for Medieval Military History, Trustee of the United States Commission on Military History, and Co-Editor of the book series "War and Conflict in Pre-Modern Societies" (ARC Humanities Press).

SCHOLAR with a Ph.D. in history from the University of Delaware, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

NEWS! John will publish two books this year: Seven Myths of Military History (Hackett, available now), and Jerusalem Falls: Seven Centuries of Conflict and Resolution in the Middle Ages (Yale University Press, in October).
